This story was originally published by the UK’s The Daily Mail – It is an image that captured an epic moment in U.S. history – a sailor locked in a passionate kiss with a nurse in New York City’s Times Square at the end of World War II.
And, after decades of dispute, the couple in the 1945 photograph were revealed to be 89-year-olds George Mendonsa and Greta Zimmer Friedman.

Annapolis, MD—Lawrence Verria, co-author of The Kissing Sailor: The Mystery Behind the Photo That Ended World War II, along with the “Kissing Sailor” himself—Mr. George Mendonsa and the “nurse”—Ms. Greta Friedman, will be featured on CBS “This Morning Saturday” this Saturday (11 August) during the 8 to 9:00am segment. CBS brought Mendonsa and Freidman together to meet in Times Square for the first time in 67 years since that fateful kiss took place there on 14 August 1945. George Mendonsa’s wife, Rita—also featured in that famous photo—was interviewed as well. This should be a wonderful segment on one of the most iconic photos of all time!
